Arts and crafts have always flourished in Walloon
Brabant. Already in the Middle Ages our artisans were famous for their
masterly achievements in the arts of tapestry, ceramics, goldsmiths
work, wood sculpture, stained glass, lacework, stone-cutting and bookbinding.
Todays arts and crafts are worthy successors of this tradition.
The Arts and Crafts Office of the Walloon Brabant Province is an association
created in 1995 on the initiative of the young Walloon Brabant Province.
It brings together some 60 artisans specialising in a variety of crafts
such as ceramics, engraving, stone-cutting, the manufacture of artistic
candles, printing, miniature painting, patchwork, enamel, painting on
silk and other textiles, decorative mosaics and stained glass.
The Office des Métiers d'Art de la Province du Brabant wallon aims
to promote high-quality crafts in general and the works of artisans in
the Walloon Brabant and Brussels region in particular.
To this end, the Office publishes a catalogue and takes part in exhibitions
both in Belgium and abroad. The Office also assists with events organised
by the Entente interprovinciale des Métiers dart de
Wallonie (Provincial Arts and Crafts Offices Association),
with which the provincial offices are associated, and takes part in a
variety of activities, including the Salon des Métiers dart
de Wallonie (Walloon Exhibition of Arts and Crafts) and the Week-end
chez lartisan (Weekend with craftsmen).
